If there are people living there, any of their personal possessions of any sort of value are targets, one recent phenomenon has been the theft of any sort of "good" prescription drugs like strong pain pills, etc.

I think your FIL is well aware of your recent financial troubles ( that you alluded to) as well as has been through home repairs and at least understands the pain of writing some home maintenance checks or upgrades over the years.
