If you or the tenant do not feel comfortable interacting then just send them a letter with your contact info and where they can send rent. 

I'm also open to discussing any way I could possibly be of value to your own business, I certainly don't want this interaction to be a one-way street.I'm really not looking for anyone to tell me how impossible it is to invest here and all the downsides of being in California, I know it's a tough state but I've already met several investors who have found great success here, so I know it's possible with the right approach.
