I am personally biased but at the end of the day most people that has excess income in retirement would end up buying in Hawaii anyway.

Hah. maybe I'm biased as i'm a local, but I love it here! 

The more properties you own and the more leveraged you are, the higher the 'risk' you are, and the more likely this is to happen - "owns a bunch of rental properties" is not a "protected class" the way gender and race are, so they can discriminate on this basis if they wish. 

(This also might be why I'm more cognizant of this than other's might be, so there's likely bias in my opinion, take it for what it's worth.) 

This place is culturally bias in such a complete way that it daily seems unreal.  

We all get blinded by our own biases, and there's nothing wrong with seeing how anyone else does it.
