Are you going to have to re-do all the electric inside  The house is old, but not in a historic district, so it is not subject to any additional regulations.The electric will need further evaluation.  

I’ll be picking up a few books on the subject but I would like to get something above and beyond that as well.

So I knew them directly and since i'm pretty connected in my area most people know me as someone who is always interested in looking at any property so they come to me quite frequently.

I have a master's degree and have learned from plenty of difficult teachers in my day, I've learned how to teach a subject and how not to.

@Karthik RamachandranIf you are just starting out, then there are several ways  to pick a location:1) your own backyard - sounds like it is out of the question for you2) where you have friends and/or family and plan to visit3) where you'd want to frequently visit4) where you'd potentially want to retireThis can give you a head start of some geo areas and then you can narrow your search down based on the additional research of each location

Value though is a subjective measurement.

I think I should also note, the main house is in my name only and would not be subject to capital gains tax.
