I don't know if the Ameriprise guys in Austin are any good, but I like their financial planning models, and while their advisors are hit and miss, if you get a good one its a very pleasant experience.Full disclosure I used to work for Ameriprise Financial as a Brokerage Operations Specialist, so I may be biased, although I no longer work there, and frankly as an employer they are less than stellar, so I feel like I'm not THAT biased.

You could also talk to people who live in the street and ask about any negative effects of living there.I have bought many properties thousands of miles away from where I live, but I have visited everyone multiple times and spoken to many non biased people before making a decision to buy.

Although I'm biased toward my own profession, hands down the fastest way to get your hands on currently available foreclosures is to get a competent agent who knows foreclosure work and can find them for you on MLS.

I am more of an advocate to just focus on making more money, improving yourself, and eventually you will have money to invest in RE. ( I am bias as this is what I did ) On the flip side, my partners never invested in anything besides RE and just stacked cash, flipped a lot of homes, and eventually bought rentals.
