Most disputes are over security deposits and the most you'll lose is a couple months worth of rent.

A bank would have demanded that all 3 issues be resolved before lending me money -- I could have probably forced the seller to pay for most of the resolution.   

The creditors accepting such payments aren't asking for the name on the creditor's account to match the name of the checking account - otherwise, you couldn't be a nice guy and pay for your brother's or son's mortgage when he is short on funds ;)  Then, once you receive your checking statement and see the bogus check by phone on your statement, you get to dispute that fraudulent transaction that you did not originate - but the funds were missing from your account in the meantime.

It could be something silly that happened recently that they don't know about or are in disputes with.

The drama started early in the month when my friend was arrested because one of the other roommates claimed he touched her, but it was over a dispute about wasting water in the unit.
