When threatened to go to the police station the passengers  basically whined and pleaded not to be brought to the police station.

One of the common things I see with newer investors (I was guilty of this as well) is the "shiny object" syndrome. 

And though I would like to believe that a jury would not find a property owner guilty for a guest chasing after a wild animal and getting bit, there is still the time and out of pocket expense of getting an attorney to defend such a nonsense case. 

He also used a lot of other questionable tax-dodging strategies like writing off high-interest loans to his kids, fudging numbers on the value of his properties to pay less taxes, then fudging them the other way to get loans, etc. etc. etc.... let's not forget his company was found guilty of criminal tax fraud.
