They can sell this right of redemption to a third party so that the third party can pay off the loan and take possession of the property even if it has been sold at auction, as long as the property is within the redemption period.

If a person squats long enough to claim adverse possession there could be a problem, but that person would have to reside in and care for the home for 10 years and pay the taxes on the property during that time.
