The reasoning was if I wanted to go to college, I would be ready and if I didn't want to go to college, the tougher high school curriculum would put me in a better position to handle life.My parents were not wealthy and the math made sense.

You hear a lot of stories of people that have done that but A) There are probably 1,000 people that fail for every success story and B) They often don't actually own the property they're talking about but 'control'' it and it is actually owned by a wealthy investor of theirs.I say none of this to discourage you.
