How much has REI made for you?

I apologize if this topic seems impolitic, but REI is one of those areas where people were heavily sold on the idea becoming very wealthy back in the 90s and early 00s, and a lot of folks lost their shirts over it. I totally acknowledge that real-estate is statistically one of the most profitable segments of the economy, but profitable for whom? Do small, private investors actually consistently rise out of lower and middle income brackets? What have you made in total? Who on here has made the most in their REI career? ROI over time since you began? What kind of assets did you start out with to invest? Etc etc.

I just don't want to waste my time here being solicited for 'investment opportunity' after 'investment opportunity', running a rat-race of low margins and splitting profits with small-timers while someone else makes out big on my effort.
