Did a large umbrella policy protect you?  

NOTE: We have checked with our current personal property insurance company, and they don't write umbrella policies if "vacant" properties will be involved.

She uses a trust and umbrella insurance.

You can always look at umbrella policies for protection, although I can't give you much advice in that area.

You should also look into getting an umbrella policy which would up the coverage even more.

Some people think LLCs are a silly idea, and you can protect personal assets with an umbrella policy. 

My guess is that you can group them into 3 or 4 companies and end up with better coverage then trying to fit them into just one.One company that can help on the Umbrella is PersonalUmbrella.com  they may be able to write one umbrella over all your units.

Liability:  make sure you have a long conversation with your insurance company and get a minimum of $1MM umbrella policyLegal:  you had better follow the Texas Property Code to the letter regarding fencing, locks, etc.

... if so, then just buy a good umbrella insurance policy, it accomplishes the same effect, and depending on how big your house is, it may be cheaper than the extra costs you will see in your increase LLC's mortgage interest rate.
