Especially considering your only other lodging options are smokey casinos or run down motels.I also don’t buy the “there’s always huge crazy parties going on” excuse often given by residents in these cases.

So, what I have seen work is buying them very cheap as squatter lodges, tossing the squatters, making repairs, then renting and keeping up with maintenance.

You can deduct the travel to and from (mileage or airfare), you can deduct lodging for the day of business as well as a day on either side for travel.
