Or, create a low planter (a bit more work and money, but would look the best) out of the least expensive material (cinder block?)

If done correctly (with windows, nice stone finish material, etc), it could be an architectural asset as well.With some proper professional landscaping (maybe also cut out a planter along the side of house), and addressing the driveway issues, that should eliminate the aesthetic liabilities and give you an amazing amount of curb appeal.There are other possibilities for completely redesigning the approach to the entry (straight off the front with a right-angle landing and a gabled portico), but would involve a lot more demo-ing, building, and expense.Similar to this:http://www.houzz.com/photos/17493/Becker-Architect...

Brilliant minds think alike, @Julia Blythe, because that's exactly what I wanted to do with those front windows - they seem to be calling out for planter boxes there.  :-)

I saw a renter hanging a jacket on a swinging planter holder near the gas stove and thought, they could burn my place down.

You might consider adding a small flower planter to the bottom of the windows if you can also figure out how to get a water line to them from your irrigation system.

Now some nice bright flowers in those planters and you will be done!

We did that on a Seattle property a few years ago and were able to avoid digging up the planters, sidewalks and street which saved a ton of money.

And a big colorful planter/fake plant by the front door would be nice.
