You can pull out that piece of trim that's there and see how much it overlaps the floor to determine the dimensions of your new trim.

It doesn't need a lot of work, little bit of everything in terms of finishing touches (paint touch ups, drywall patches) and very tiny jobs (installing closet doors, trims and baseboards in some areas).

At that point my wife was my girlfriend; we fixed up the home over the next year or so (replaced the older carpet/vinyl floors with hardwood/tile/laminate, painted all the interior walls, added improved lighting/trim, etc.).

Make sure your scope of work is sufficiently detailed, for example, if paying for exterior trim or siding, the quote needs to specify caulking and painting.
