I'd start looking around the major universities in those cities.  2nd rule- If you can't get there with a direct flight from your location then take the city off your list.

Some people prefer not to have someone living above them, so would deal with an additional flight of stairs to avoid the noise.

What I didn’t know is that I would have to spend an extra week there just waiting for my flight out.

I love edmonton for us west coasters due to the quick / cheap flight and abundance of opportunities.
