You and the insurance company have a responsibility to monitor the job and hold the contractor accountable.

We have a Nest thermostat to monitor the temp in the house and Nest security cameras on the exterior.

These give me the ability to monitor things.

Finally, get a remote showing service such as Rently, etc. then you can allow access to vendors or prospective tenants and monitor the property at the same time for a reasonable fee. 

In the infinite wisdom of the Darien City Counsel it was determined that landlord's with 4 or more unit buildings would be required to install a fire monitoring system that directly alerts the fire station when a tenant burns their toast.
