I would imagine the training as almost apprenticeship like where its highly assumed that person will go off to do their own thing.

Ya it happens... but for most that do that they put in their apprenticeships first.. and your not working in an area were real estate sells for less than new cars.. like so many of those you see post on BP..

If you're willing to work for free, I'd suggest a better option is you join a trade apprenticeship program - possibilities include carpentry, electrical etc.
