As much as I have a passion for real estate, I have an equally burning desire for research and academia, so that's where the PhD fits into my plans for my life.

Not sure what your doctorate is in or what you plan to do once you are done, but I'd urge you to look at the job market, especially if you plan to stay in academia. 

But for me, most academia-based jobs are pretty equally dry and boring even if they're intellectually stimulating but they're tolerable especially if I'll know that they're only temporary.
