The reason is because there is a larger buyer base, which means if I need to unload properties I can do it quickly.

Most GCs work with a particular supplier - like Pro Build or 84 Lumber.

I would personally unload it and try to put my money into something else where the numbers work better. 

The family's referred to it as timberland, and I know that a while back, they sold off some lumber to a lumber company.
