I would do a simple counter top on the island, maybe butcher block to add character.  

You could consider what they post, this may help to develop an idea of their character.

From the start we knew his character better than that of our other tenants, so that was a plus.

I attribute my success to 2 factors.  1- unrelenting determination.  2- the ability to admit and identify that I need to utilize people who are better at a particular skill set than me and check my big head at the door.
