As a marketer, I've struggled to understand that - I chalk it up to differences in competition and/or culture.

No, it’s not about color but some diversity would widen the impact of bigger pockets for all cultures interested in real estate.

I echo the comments on police stats nearby and have heard smarter people than I suggest driving by at all hours of the day and night to get a good idea of the block by block culture.

I have a dream to flip the city of Gary Indiana and change the culture and the make up of the city.

It does make sense to me now, and I gained a better understanding ,that though we share a similar culture and language, we are different countries with very different systems. 

While I think there are some instances where the "PC culture" gets taken a bit far, this is definitely not one of them and your comment doesn't even apply to this situation.

Thanks everyone  I tend to buy in the Southern half of the US for 3 reasons:1) you get much higher year-round occupancy rates in the South & it’s simply tough to earn a good ROI in the North if your place sits vacant for a big chunk of the year2) Culturally, the Southern half of the US seems to be a lot more accepting of STRs regulation-wise.
