In terms of taxes and program eligibility in the US, food stamps are considered a "non-cash" benefit, v. something like Social Security or Unemployment benefits, which are cash and can, in theory, be taxed and count as income when applying for programs like Section 8 or Medicaid.

If you can get better return investing the Roth IRA in a rental property than you can in other options available to the IRA - conventional financial products, or other non-traditional assets such as notes - then that rental is the best place to put the IRA money.For someone with considerable resources of both retirement savings and personal funds, and a desire to be diversified, it may make sense to look at something other than income property in an IRA if you also hold rentals outside the IRA.If you are just looking at the IRA in it's own right, however, then it simply becomes a matter of where that IRA can achieve the best results.You are correct that the Roth IRA will not pay taxes on the income produced through cash flow and appreciation.
