The cabinets, bathrooms, and common room walls are all in okay shape but there are some aesthetic issues and potential demo needed everywhere else.I have no idea on the piping, gas and electric in the home for it has sat unused for years (who can I turn to evaluate this on a budget?)

Another thing that might be beneficial since you are interested in flipping is finding a contractor (maybe a family friend) that would let you shadow them during the summer or weekends or maybe even pay you to perform demo, clean up, etc. and learn from them.

good advice here. one thing to consider when a plumber is charging you $250/hr, you only want him to do plumbing. not demoing, trenching, jack hammering, re-installing tile, and other such stuff. keep shopping quotes.
