I've been able to trace back my ancestors to the late 1800s and found they were all real estate investors, even in Germany where one was so successful he gave his town it's first fire station.

One issue I forgot to mention is that they are relocating from California to Washington, but the husband is then being stationed in Germany for 2 years (leaving the wife and child behind for this time) until he is re-stationed here.

In Germany we state these licenses "master craftsman" and you need an "master craftsman certificate" for hitting a nail into a wall.

Anotyher point was that the US lagged in homeownership, yes, because in Europe and Asia, land has been owned for hundreds of years by the same families, single family markets in Germany are very slow.
