For instance, if my wife and I were to die overnight, we want to make sure that her parents at least have a chance at recovering their capital (morbid, but you never know...). 

Since you are non-spousal with your parents, you might get a partial step up in basis upon their death (sorry, rather morbid topic, but thougth you were asking).

Not to sound morbid, but your body resistance is high enough that you can get electrocuted before a standard circuit breaker trips.
