When I was younger, I bought into the line that the one who dies with the most toys wins.

Just got faced with a $4000 bill (no, didnt buy a new iphone or a shiny new toy), it's an expense I have to take care of (around $1300/mo for the next 3 months), and my job is putting me on 3 month no work and no pay (i guess you can say laid off) at the end of this month.So no income + $4000 in expenses. 

Currently for a power tool company, but have designed fitness equipment, toys, housewares, office furniture, gardening tools, the list goes on...

The 2nd goal would then be to grow that portfolio to $Y of total liquid assets that could then be applied to a passive fund withdrawing by the 4% rule. 

I've since rolled everything into a SD IRA and use that to invest in some of our apartment deals, but still toy with the idea of pulling it out of the IRA, pay the penalty and know that I'll recoup all the penalty plus some on the first investment. 

“Do don’t have your own home but you have rental properties” —again we work on the road and live in a 45 ft toy hauler that’s worth more than most our friends houses.

Sold some toys (cars) and invested everything we had into a business.
