These are your employees who are on call 24/7 so consider that you're getting below minimum wage for their services.

They all have employees and offices and overhead and are not doing this alone.

However, the joke is on them, I am a BRRRR investor, have over 30 employees and do all of the work in house on my investments.  

He did as you thought, held it for a friend and then the employees dropped the ball and didn't follow up. 

Very few employees of any kind can say this.
