A good first step would be to find mentors such as entrepreneurs in your industry who have successfully raised capital in the past or others with the expertise and experience to guide you. 

Most all self-made wealthy entrepreneurs that have maintained wealth for a period of time understand that living below your means is the cornerstone of building wealth.

These were a big portion of my clients - tech entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers.
