If you just went over the wall and painted thinking the smell would go away that was a big mistake.I have had to actually before spray down walls with a cleaner to get the film off the sheetrock.

If you're set on spray painting the electrical plates / covers, then I suggest you line up the screw heads for spray paint as well (tape over the threaded part and try to have the heads of the screws level).
