My initial reaction was to end the lease at the date they had requested which would give them approximately one month to clear things out at while making repairs that may be necessary and/or marketing the apartment.

So, technically, yes, they should have had you sign the work authorization not the tenant, but your reaction should be appreciation.Secondly, as pointed out above, this should be paid for by your homeowners insurance.
