I will be living in Manhattan.

If I would get into real estate I've been looking at college towns such as Lincoln Nebraska and Manhattan Kansas.

I don't own any properties yet, and am looking at multi-family properties outside of the area I live in (Manhattan) due to the crazy costs of buying in NYC.

I would imagine that you are going to make contacts but in a commercial PM job (especially for larger companies) you are going to make contacts who are doing large deals (and I see you are from NJ so if its any where near Manhattan then HUGE deals) which as a beginning real estate investor may not be the easiest thing to jump into.As far as begining to understand REI any job in RE would help you gain a better understanding of that aspect of REI, so it certainly wouldn't hurt.
