The biggest thing to be sure is set up right is your US entity and bank account (for example, it's not an LLC for Canadians....an LLC will cost more in tax issues).

Between everything you have said and all that I have read I do feel that insulating yourself with an LLC is the way to go as long as it is set up right from the start and you keep your personal and business financing completely separate.
