Some may even use unlicensed handyman type guys to do the renovation, which still can work if you are able to supervise for quality control and have the experience to spot quality workers (be they licensed or not) ... heck, I can't even begin to tell you how many GCs in my market use these same unlicensed guys regularly as subs on their crew, especially for paint, drywall, tile, counters, finished plumbing, etc. ... maybe not so much with rough in plumbing, rough in electric, etc. where licensed guys are used more.
