Look at your own individual investment goals and tailor to that with someone who can guide you along and point out potential pitfalls.Also, as a side note....in the many years of owning rental properties in different locations, I usually find that my properties in the "not the best neighborhoods" have the highest rate of return.

Yes, it's good to hear different perspectives from others and take away something from everyone... but you should tailor your investing to what suits you...and what is right for your situation...don't let one persons strategy be the "be all end all" that's giving them way to much power and control.

As well, look into banks/credit unions that tailor to Veterans, these can be a great source of financing.Investment wise, house-hacking is still viable in Portland but you will have to have quite a bit of capital to make it work well.
