A better market would be dry arid regions like AZ, NV and parts of CA. 

The exterior clapboard sidings, rake boards, fascia were slowly rotting away from years of neglect.

We are a humid climate and rot is also a factor.

no average jo blo can save their way to wealth, society keeps people in debt, ergo amortization of debt....buying and hoarding stuff(in storage you pay busting out of your garage no less ), stuff you don't need rotting in storage or does not have value other than cashflow for storage unit business owners.

I called a company that an insurance had referred to do the drying .  

I’d rather trust a professional with a moisture meter to see if it’s dry (just after or even during a heavy rain would make me feel better) before fixing the ceiling.

Additionally, you should probably instruct the PM to dry out the attic if you have with fans and / or a dehumidifier.
