This duplex was built for an heiress in 1923, when the population density of Homestead, PA, just down the road, was the same as Manhattan's today.

People who sell here can buy anywhere and everywhere (except London and Manhattan:)), but people in other parts cannot sell and buy in the Bay easily.

But I get back to the region occasionally to visit family in Manhattan.

If your daughter is planning to live in Manhattan and close to the NYU campus, typically all places in Manhattan (south of Harlem) will be very safe.

The risks are obviously placing a big bet on a PF home and then taking a loss on the money I had acquired to begin with but with the higher risk, the reward to me seems like it would be greater as well.

When I travel occasionally on business to the Newport station from 33rd st in Manhattan its all local stops but that's where my commute ends.

I think it makes a lot of sense for rentals for students - say an apartment in Union Square in Manhattan over by NYU because the students are accustomed to free and easy access to wifi and don't have much concern about whether it's the lowest tier plan vs. something like gigabit eithernet.

However, Manhattan has always been this areas tether and, despite recent trends of vacancies in NYC, it has time and time again proven very resilient.
