its all balance and for me you do have to stop and smell the roses and do some things that you like to do other wise whats the point.. 

Fighting for a cause:In the military, they instill in you that "you are fighting for a cause bigger than yourself" a phrase used over and over again to assure you that you are fighting the nation's battles to protect our way of life.

Is the smell from personal hygene?

I think you need to prepare mentally for a battle, make sure that you have a war chest, and can outlast these tenants through a legal/eviction battle, or pay them to leave. 

Are we fighting a losing battle for future buys?  

Soot and smoke removal is a must, the smells can get stuck in the wood so it has to be cleaned and sealed correctly.So the best way to under when a place is worth it, is to see how much of the structure is burnt.

Exceptionally clean and smelled nice. 

On either type, if you cut the spout off with a saw it will either release the spout or remove enough of it so you can fight the battle from a different hilltop.
