Not sure if you've found a place yet, but one thing to keep in mind: DC has very strict laws about the "English basement" apartments you're referring to, specifically the minimum height of the ceiling, which has to be 7 feet or greater.

To answer @Chaz Reid  and @Jesse MacNeill , I came to Korea in 2008 just to teach English for a year, but loved it and decided to stay a couple more.  

Our daughter is an avid English "hunter" style rider (horse shows), so it might be neat if horse ranch was nearby. 

Mike if you are okay with moving into very transitional neighborhoods I would suggest English Ave, Vine City, and Grove park.

I've also read how terrible College Park, Forest Park, and Hapeville are, however at a glance look much more inviting than other areas (north of I20) such as English Ave, Bankhead, Grove Park, Vine City, and Just Us.
