I replaced 3 hard wired smoke detectors with 10 year battery smoke / CO detectors. 

But it starts with baby steps.For me, it was: cancelling the cable, stop eating out, go on dates that didn’t involve money, cancelling the monthly subscriptions/memberships, working out at home, make coffee at home, quitting cigarettes, etc.

There is a disincentive to go long term for many reasons- the investment in all the furnishings goes up in smoke, they risk getting stuck with long term rent control tenants, etc.

In order of decreasing importance, I worry about liability from burns on children/pets (they get ridiculously hot while operating), risk of house fire (like if they lean something combustible against it or do not provide a wide enough berth around it), and smoke damage/deposits on the walls from improper use/air mixture adjustment. 

Smoking weed most likely.

Is there evidence of destruction, or you just observed pets and smoking?

After 13 great experiences in 3 units, I had 2 CNA tenants trash a unit in 3 months, left evidence of drug use, smoked in the unit, had an unapproved pet poop and pee on carpets and in the bed, damaged or stole several items and shorted me on the last month's rent. 

They come to the property - make sure the smoke detectors are working and any other violations that might need fixed.This is pretty similar to surrounding east side suburbs.
