I don't think the cost difference is much different between what I did and a durable floor paint.

Then, you can have a hand-made look to the lettering but also get the better durability of the plastic materials that these signs normally would be printed on.

Yes it get's dirty, but it's easy and cheap to replace, and if your renters are semi-clean people, there's a good chance you'll be able to get away with just cleaning it when they move out.For house #2, always do tile in the wet spaces (kitchen/bathrooms), relatively cheap, durable and easy to replace.  

Tile is the most durable floor and Fusion grout never stains or needs sealing and best if all, it is a consistant color because it is premixed so even a very dark grout has no efflourescence.
