But, from what I am reading my sense is that you are interested in traveling indefinitely, and want a stable (sustainable) lifestyle during that time, but your current intention is to eventually return home.

It's not ready, the yard is a mess, and the landlord is telling you he'll be around indefinitely making noise and climbing around in your yard working on landscaping.  

You accepted it the way it is, and you are still okay with living there indefinitely, you're just mad that the landlord is greedy.  

From my understanding I will inherit this tax rate as will my children and their children indefinitely.

So, it is definitely important to get the initial rent as high as possible as the new tenant could stay indefinitely. 

Landlord that only raise their rents every several years to catch up are more likely to force tenants to consider leaving.If you want to keep your tenants indefinitely simply never raise their rents.
