Do you want to drive far away to scout properties and do deals all the time?

You'll need some boots on the ground to scout the properties while overseas for prospecting/purchasing but this can all be done.

You're able to gain insight on the strength of the market from sites like bea.gov, berkadia.com,  neighborhood scout, and several others.  

I know of city-data and neighborhood scout but are there other resources that I could be looking over?
