I'd recommend using verizon one talk, google voice or some other app that allows you to have a second number on your primary phone. 

Before leaving we took our 'smartphones' into Verizon to be programmed/setup for international calls/data etc.

We use Total Wireless on Verizon network for $35/mo each with 5GB data each.
