It is like a mini central AC with separate outdoor small compressor and indoor wall mount evaporators, but the evap. mounts to the wall and recirculates/cools just that area in each "zone".

As far as the ramp goes, I watched an episode of Income Property (or whatever the name of the show is where the guy helps homeowners create basement apartments) and they installed a ramp that was "temporary" -- it was metal and it rolled up (like tank treads) and just had a mounting bracket installed on the house itself which did not impact the stairs, so when the ramp was removed, the stairs were usable.

What I don't like about it is that it feels physically isolated (being tucked in between Mount Olivet Road and New York Avenue) and has less access to public transportation (no metro or trolley).
