First time landlord/self-property manager here, what are my responsibilities when it comes to hiring contractors and giving/ asking for 1099s?

If you plan to self-manage and can find something within 15 min of your home or work then STR is a good move. 

The only thing to keep in mind is you need to owner-occupy the property if you buy the property with a VA loan. 2) If you plan on living in one unit self managing would be the best option.
