Looks like you and I switched coasts....I grew up in Upstate NY but left for greener (warmer) pastures and now live in Los Angeles. 

Hey Brandon, Yes Its one of those situations where you are wondering if the grass is greener somewhere else, only because this CPA is all you have known.

Not because I don't believe in Des Moines, but because many ppl see the bright and shiny object of another city and "the grass is always greener" mentality.That being said, if you absolutely wont invest somewhere more local, maybe because of the economy or the governmental laws in your state, I can attest, Des Moines does have properties that meet many investor's criteria.

@Julie Coleman still living on the other side of the planet, so i did not pursue the house hack deal because I cant live it in it, but did still end of buying the place with a partner who allowed us to pay cash so no bank…that was nice!

That typically indicates that the value of your portion of the planet will increase.Coastal locations are like the holy grail.
