By focusing on all 5 pillars, you will find balance, or harmony in life.

Would these same people think that purple is harmonious if their neighbors painted their house with it?

It's never going to be harmonious ever, but therein lies the secret elixir. 

Some people love living in apartment complexes because of the amenities, it's frequent for SFRs nearby (if both are in good locations) to function in harmony because a steady stream of people will be looking to . . . get a yard for their (oversized, non-apartment-friendly) dog, get rid of the noisy upstairs neighbor, get a little more privacy, "move up" a bit, etc.  

If they all lived there in harmony for 6 years before a problem erupted, there's a good chance the problem was personal, a 50-50 chance the former tenants caused it and a good chance that the former tenants used it as an excuse to leave. 

My concern is I have a craftsman style house, what if the ADU design is not in harmony with the main propertyIs going custom will drive up the cost significantly?

I have a craftsman style home and want to make sure the ADU design is in harmony with the main propertyI am also curious to learn what kind of tenants it will attract and is the rental price in line with how much someone will pay renting a 1 or 2 bdr apartment?

I'm just saying look at both strategies, understand that they are both co-existing in Detroit, and decide which is best for you (or a blend).
