The plan was to knock it down and construct a new building, one fitting for the style and architecture of the neighborhood. 

I had planned on creating more equity by trying to build the house myself by getting some architectural plans and then subbing out the work when the cost of materials and labor comes down a bit more.

Not for bulk purchases: I have had success finding old knobs, pulls and hinges at antique and architectural salvage stores, which are far more common in the Northeast US than in other regions.

Find popular, trendy, similar architecture/age properties on Zillow, airbnb, etc and see what styles, designs, finshes etc they went with.

Reach out to the heads of the architecture and/or interior design departments at those schools and see if they have students who need practical experience and would help for a lower price-- or perhaps for free for the experience.
