I'm wondering what the opinions are out there for communication strategies in these instances.

It boils down to communicating with the custodian so they understand what you're doing.I also really like IRAFinancial because, like My Solo 401k Financial, they give lots of great information on youtube. 

They do some communication, but most is up to you as it is about maintenance etc.

Then get someone who focuses on communication.

He has great communication and does a wonderful job of explaining things- even if you need to hear them a few times :)  I can't recommend him enough.
