In any kind of business dealing directly with people you have to get a thick skin and not take things personally.

A 4" slab thickness is pretty typical for a basement slab. 

The stove and outside of the oven has a thick layer of grease on it.

Without looking at your specific situation, and just throwing out a idea, pour a new 12" thick capping slab over top of you existing slab that is properly waterproofed.
